Leonardo da Vinci: Opera Omnia @ National Art Gallery, KL

Malaysians will be able to view all of Leonardo Da Vinci’s remaining paintings from July 15 to August 15, 2019 at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. The travelling exhibition — ‘Leonardo da Vinci: Opera Omnia’ — is part of a series of events around the world to celebrate the life of Da Vinci and to commemorate the 500th year since his death in 1519.

The Renaissance artist has produced many masterpieces in his lifetime including the pertinent ‘Vitruvian Man’, a drawing that redefined the concept of proportions in art and architecture. Today, only 17 of his oil paintings remain and you can witness them in actual size all in one place thanks to augmented reality.

“The ‘Leonardo da Vinci: Opera Omnia’ is an innovative, ambitious project aiming to share  Italian cultural heritage by exhibiting ‘digital paintings’ in high definition — true-to-size reproductions of Leonardo’s 17 paintings, which are scattered in various locations and museums all around the world,” the Embassy of Italy to Malaysia wrote on Facebook.

Visitors can expect masterpieces like the ‘Mona Lisa’ and ‘The Last Supper’ to be reproduced in their original dimensions, respectively. In a press release by the National Art Gallery, curator Prof. Antonio Paolucci assured that the artworks will not only look real, but sensorially immersive as well.

He said: “Thanks to shrewdly regulated light, they elicit the emotions one normally has when standing in front of the originals.”
